Lawmaker wants to regulate pet health insurance

SACRAMENTO, CA

The Assembly insurance committee passed a bill Wednesday that would prohibit a pet insurer from denying coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

Assm. Dave Jones, D-Sacramento, says pet insurers are signing people up for coverage and then giving them nothing.

"They're being told that their pet insurance will cover their pet and all sorts of conditions with that, only to discover like humans do that a pre-existing condition can result in their not getting the insurance," Jones said.

Jones says the bill is designed to make sure consumers get the information they need to make a smart decision before spending their money.
