No one was abducted or hurt, but the suspect still has not been caught.
A neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, told ABC7 he heard gunshots near his home on Parkshore Drive. He said "I heard three shots. I got up and looked out the window and when I saw the person running, all dressed in black running down the street, then he ran to the right."
The man in black matches the description of an individual who tried to kidnap a girl along Edgewater Drive.
The girl walked toward a bus stop at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday morning.
"A suspect came up from behind her, grabbed her, knocked her to the ground. The juvenile did the absolute right thing by fighting back, screaming, yelling," said Newark Police Cmr. Robert Douglas.
The noise attracted the attention of a passing bicyclist who flagged down a passing car and asked the driver to follow the suspect who was walking away.
"While he did that, he followed the suspect onto Parkshore. The suspect turned around and fired three shots from a handgun," said Douglas.
No one was injured in the incident.
The suspect is described as an African-American man in his late teens to early 20s, 6'2" tall, with a medium build and goatee style beard. He was wearing a black knit cap and black baggy clothing.
The police search for the suspect prompted the Newark Unified School District to lock down all 10 of its schools for about 25 minutes in the morning.
"We had been notified that he possibly had a weapon and so therefore as a precautionary measure we put our schools into lockdown to secure the safety of our students until we were notified that the community was cleared," said Newark school superintendent Kevin Harrigan.
Parent Elizabeth Pagendarm has two children that attend an elementary school near where the incident happened.
"I'm always aware of anybody whose doesn't look like they should belong on campus," said Pagendarm.
The suspect is still on the loose. Police don't know if the suspect left the area by car or by foot.
