Kids, parents picket outside OUSD headquarters

OAKLAND, CA

Dozens of kids picketed in front of school district headquarters in Oakland. Parents claim the district is putting their worst teachers at Lazear Elementary, which serves mostly low-income Latino students.

Parent Olga Gonzales singled out a teacher who, she says, should be removed.

"There was a child who got grabbed by the collar neck of his shirt, was straggled around, [and] thrown onto a desk by a teacher because he was not behaving," she said.

Oakland superintendent Tony Smith walked down from his office and invited the parents to meet in his office.

"They've not had good teaching and that's not OK," he said. "We have to figure out how to get high quality teachers in every classroom."

The superintendant promised to work with the teachers union and the school to solve the problems.
