A new report released Tuesday says California's proposed high speed rail train should go through the Altamont Pass and East Bay to provide the fastest service between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The report also says going through the Altamont Pass would cause less environmental damage than going through the Peninsula and the Pacheco Pass.

The report was prepared by French company, Setec Ferroviaire, which is not involved in contracts with the state.

The High Speed Rail Authority will study the report in June or July.
