The majority of changes being implemented in the city's transportation system include reducing frequencies on most bus routes and rail lines and hours of operation on others, according to Muni officials, who have waged an outreach campaign all week to alert customers of significant schedule changes.
"Our goal is to create a more effective and reliable system that fits the constraints of our current budget," SFMTA Executive Director Nathaniel Ford said in a statement.
Ford said that if the transportation agency's fiscal outlook improves, the changes being implemented today could be rolled back in fiscal year 2011-2012, which begins July 1.
The changes that are part of a comprehensive cost-savings plan needed to bridge projected deficits in Muni's upcoming budgets are expected to create savings of $4.8 million in the current fiscal year, and $28.5 million in fiscal year 2010-2011, according to Muni estimates.
