At 2:22 a.m. Tuesday, police received a report of two suspects removing parts from a green Lexus in the 5000 block of Shasta Avenue, police Lt. Mark Foisie said.
When officers arrived, one of the suspects jumped over a fence and the other, the 17-year-old boy, climbed into the back of a stolen Toyota 4Runner and crawled toward the driver's seat, Foisie said.
That teen began driving the SUV near an officer, who was standing between the suspect's car and another parked vehicle. The officer "thought he was going to be squished" and fired three shots at the SUV, Foisie said.
The driver was hit by at least two bullets but continued driving until the SUV got stuck on a berm in the 6000 block of McBryde Avenue, Foisie said.
The teen, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was arrested and taken to John Muir Medical Center. He was in stable condition this morning, Foisie said. Investigators planned to travel to the hospital today to talk with him.
The second suspect was not found, Foisie said.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident, he said.
