SF Archbishop steps into immigration debate

SAN FRANCISCO

"What we want to do is bring the 11 million undocumented out of the shadows, register them with the government, require them to pay a fine and any taxes they owe, and require them to learn English as they work and wait in the back of the line for a chance for citizenship," said Niederauer.

Meantime, the Simon Wiesenthal Center has denounced comparisons of Arizona's new immigration law to Nazi Germany.

The Jewish rights group's criticism follows comments made by Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahoney and a Los Angeles city councilman.
