It appears San Francisco cable cars are handing out a lot of free rides.

A recent city controller's audit shows that 40 percent of the people who hop onboard are not paying the $5 fare.

Auditors randomly rode cable cars in December following up on a 2007 investigation that found rampant fare evasion.

The Municipal Transportation Agency has been trying to increase fare collection with reminders for operators to crackdown and longer ticket booth hours.
