The mayor cut the ribbon officially unveiling an art project that's part of it called the "Valencia Street Post."
It features four 10-foot-high telephone poles, topped with ornamental Victorian crowns. Better Streets sets new standards and guidelines governing the design of all city streets.
"A number of folks wonder why we get caught up in this, why this is so important and not all those other darn things you're supposed to focus on. The reason we highlight this is its tangible. It's a manifestation of an idea and an ideal and a vision to connect dots and connect communities in completely different way," said Newsom.
The plan includes unified streetscapes and space for what the mayor is calling "public life" and it emphasizes mass transit, cycling, and walking.
