BART board delays fate of $4.5M surplus

BART directors have delayed making a decision on what to do with a $4.5 million budget surplus.

Last month, the board proposed using half the surplus for a three-month fare reduction. But, officials say about three-quarters of transit riders who weighed in with their opinions actually oppose lower fares.

BART says surveys show riders prefer the money be used to clean carpets and seats, or put the surplus in reserves for future emergencies.

The will announce a decision next month.
