Monterey County health officials today warned swimmers of unsafe bacteria levels at beaches in Monterey and Pacific Grove.

High levels of bacteria were found in samples taken Monday at San Carlos Beach in Monterey and at Lover's Point Beach in Pacific Grove, posing a potential risk of illness, health officials said. Beachgoers are warned to avoid contact with the water.

Advisories have been posted at the beaches and will remain until testing indicates bacteria levels have dropped to safe levels.
