Tuesday night the school board unanimously voted to require all high school students to complete at least 10 hours of community service each year in order to get their diplomas.
The plan has its critics, including the principal of Novato High.
They argue community service is only meaningful when it's voluntary. The policy will be phased in over the next four years.
