Governor Schwarzenegger signed a measure allowing 40,000 more "environmentally-friendly" cars to drive solo in the diamond lanes.
The measure now covers plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell cars. Some new models are included -- GM's Chevrolet Volt, and the new Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf.
Drivers of hybrids and electric vehicles who already have permits also got theirs extended. Some lawmakers were opposed, saying carpool lanes are already too congested.
