For the first time in 20 years, there has been a confirmed sighting of a rare fox feared to be extinct.

A motion-activated camera near a ranger station captured an image of an animal that looked like a Sierra Nevada Red Fox south of Reno on August 11. Now, DNA tests have confirmed it.

The sighting happened near Sonora Pass in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

Scientists confirmed the DNA test through saliva from a sock filled with chicken that the fox bit and licked.
