Netflix apparently paid extras to pose as fans and give interviews to the press at an event celebrating their expansion to Canada.

Some media reports say the company asked for the actors to play specific roles including mothers, film buffs, tech geeks, and couch potatoes.

They even handed the actors information sheets with instructions to quote look really excited, particularly if asked by media to do any interviews about the prospect of Netflix in Canada.

Netflix executives have issued an apology and says the company did it as part of a fake documentary they planned to shoot, in order to obtain a permit for the press event.
