San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco Chief of Police George Gascon are denying a published report that there is a major internal investigation of the city's police department.

Friday the San Francisco Examiner reported that during a Police Officers Association meeting Chief Gascon said that an internal investigation was underway involving money laundering and the possible distribution of narcotics.

In a statement Friday morning, Chief Gascon said he was asked why a specific internal affairs investigative unit was created and he answered by using examples of recently investigated cases and other cases, but was not referencing a current investigation. He goes on to describe the Examiner's report as quote "bad journalism."
