The East Palo Alto Planning Commission voted Monday night to initially approve plans to build a sport complex in honor of a police officer killed in the line of duty.

Officer Rich May, 38, was killed in January 2006. He was responding to a fight at a restaurant on University Avenue when he was fatally shot by a suspect he confronted.

A foundation for May says it has raised $3 million to build and maintain the facility for youngsters.

People against the plan have traffic concerns. They have 30 days to appeal.
