CPUC to hire four new pipeline inspectors

The action comes after criticism from legislators about low staffing levels in the wake of the San Bruno gas line explosion and fire that killed eight people and destroyed 37 homes.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that mile for mile, California conducts the fewest pipe safety inspections of any state. There are currently only nine inspectors to keep tabs on 110,000 miles of gas pipelines. With the four additional inspectors, the state will meet federal staffing minimums for the first time since 2002.
