The Redwood City school district is getting $1.6 million in federal economic stimulus funds.

The district will hire about 20 teachers for the rest of the school year to make up for the 35 teachers laid off earlier.

The district wants the new hires to help current teachers, and work with students needing additional help. But the union wants the new teachers to be given their own classrooms.

The school board will discuss the options Wednesday in closed session.
