East Bay commuters now have a way to avoid traffic on I-580 in the tri-valley area. The Livermore-Amador Valley Transit Authority held a ribbon cutting Thursday to unveil its new express bus service called "the rapid."

Federal tax dollars covered $11 million of the system's $14 million cost.

Gillig of Hayward made the buses, which will travel between the Dublin-Pleasanton area and Livermore.

Special technology will make "the rapid" even more rapid, by giving the buses priority at traffic signals.

Stops will include BART, the Stoneridge Mall, along with the Lawrence Livermore and Sandia national labs.
