Artists with the Academy of Art University started painting the mural Saturday, in honor of the Lunar New Year.
As part of the event, volunteers also gardened and picked up litter at Chinatown's Portsmouth Square.
Mayor Lee sent out a tweet thanking them for "cleaning and greening the city."
