Brown imposes hiring freeze to cut deficit

Gov. Brown imposed an across the board hiring freezes on all state government agencies, except for public safety and patient care jobs. Brown's order applies to all vacant, seasonal, and full-time positions.

It also prohibits the hiring of outside contractors to do the work instead, and all exceptions will have to be approved by the governor's office.

Brown is trying to close a $25 billion deficit and shave more than $350 million in operational expenses from the budget.
