San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey revealed Friday he will not run for a ninth term in the November election.

Hennessey won his first election for sheriff in 1979 and he is the longest serving of San Francisco's current elected officials.

Hennessey announced his plans in a memo to his staff.

Hennessey was recently a contender for the interim mayor's job that eventually went to Ed Lee.
