Lee signs new ordinance for energy monitoring

SAN FRANCISCO

Mayor Ed Lee signed an ordinance Friday requiring owners of existing non-residential buildings to determine how much energy each building consumes. The owners must also make the information public every year.

"I think any city, any modern city, is paying attention to their energy consumption. That's what we can sustainable cities throughout the country and I want to make sure San Francisco is doing its part to help with our environment, and to reduce energy consumption," said Lee.

Lee says the city worked with property owners to help craft this legislation. He says it will also help create jobs. People will be needed to install the monitoring equipment as well as monitor and record the energy in the city.
