Crews start tunneling on Oakland side of Caldecott

Crews started tunneling on the Oakland side of the expanded Caldecott Tunnel Thursday. The tunneling marks a major milestone for the new fourth bore project.

Work on the western side is expected to take a little bit longer because of rock conditions.

Once the work is done, two lanes will be added to the tunnel, a move that should significantly ease traffic.

The new tunnel will open to traffic by late 2013.
