Mudslide forces Mill Valley families out of homes

The public works department was at the scene Saturday, where residents on Ethel Avenue said the slide hasn't covered the road or their homes, but the mud underneath the road is washing away. The ground started to give way at about at about noon on Saturday. Public works officials said the slide was minor and caused by oversaturated soil from the rain. The mud was stopped by condos before it hit Miller Avenue. A home on Ethel Avenue was evacuated and red tagged because of the slide and because utilities had to be cutoff.

"The water line to the house was also damaged - so we were able to shut the water off. We evacuated the home immediately below the slide and then the bottom of the slide off of Miller Avenue. So we have three homes that are evacuated right now," said Jeff Davidson of the Mill Valley Fire Department.

Officials expect a section of Ethel Avenue to be closed about a month until repairs can be made.

Two families will be able to return to their homes Saturday night.
