The collision happened at about 11 p.m. as the 37-year-old man was walking on Seventh Avenue near Rodriguez Street, just outside of Santa Cruz city limits.
He had just left a large quinceanera celebration at the Veterans of Foreign Wars center nearby, according to the sheriff's office.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.
The car was described as a dark or black Chrysler 300 sedan with chrome rims, possibly a 1996 model. The driver was described as a Hispanic woman.
