Sales tax going up in several Bay Area cities

Sales tax in El Cerrito, Union City and San Leandro went up to 10 percent or higher. In Concord, the sales tax rate went up to 9.75 percent. That means a $10 dollar purchase will cost an extra five cents. And the sales tax rate went up to 9.5 percent in Santa Rosa and Novato.

The increases were all tied to measures approved by voters back in November. Cities are relying on the new higher tax rates to help balance ailing city budgets.
