Report: Calif could face teacher shortage in future

LOS ANGELES

According to today's Los Angeles Times: the number of people training to become credentialed teachers in California fell 29 percent over the last five years as school districts and colleges around the state layoff existing teachers.

Education experts warn the number of existing teachers will also drop sharply in the next few years as baby boomers begin to retire. The Cal State University system is among the nation's biggest providers of new teachers.

It now has fewer than half the number of teaching students it had eight years ago.
