CHP to target, crack down on distracted drivers

The Traffic Safety Office said at any given time, 9 percent of California drivers are illegally using handheld cellphones to talk or text, but another major crackdown is underway.

"We have over 280 local police departments that our office has signed up, plus 103 CHP offices, all taking part in this zero tolerance effort, and we expect at the end of the month to see tens of thousands of tickets written," said Chris Cochran from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

At least 20,000 people have already been cited for handheld talking or texting during the current month long crackdown. The traffic safety office by the way, said Northern California has the fewest offenders statewide.
