Neighbors rally to save 300-year-old tree

MENLO PARK, Calif.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Monday decided not to cut down the 100-foot tree until after it meets with upset residents.

Neighbors and activists staged a protest Monday morning after being told on Friday the tree needed to be removed to make room for a new water pipeline. The residents objected, claiming the SFPUC had not clearly explained why alternatives to removal had been presented.

There is no word yet when the meeting will take place.
