Health Department waits for Legionnaires' test results

The Contra Costa County Health Department is waiting for test results from the Richmond Health Center where an employee has died from Legionnaires' disease.

Health officials say the disease is triggered when people breathe in infected steam or water vapor. It can be fatal between 5 and 30 percent of the time.

Contra Costa County averages nearly ten cases per year. Legionnaires' disease is not contagious, but similar bacteria made a Richmond Health Center worker sick in 2008.

The center remains open pending test results.
