Redwood City leaders consider asking voters to raise hotel tax

Redwood City leaders will consider asking voters on Monday to raise business and hotel taxes to fill a $2.6 million budget gap.

If the city council approves it, the measure will go on the November 8th ballot where voters could pass it with a simple majority.

Hotel occupancy taxes tend to be popular with voters because the taxes are paid by out-of-town visitors.

The business license tax in Redwood City hasn't seen an increase since 1994. Voters soundly rejected the last attempt to raise it in November, 2009.
