State Energy Commission looks for more ways to save energy

A legislative committee in Sacramento reported Thursday that we've saved $65 billion in energy costs since 1978.

Californians save more than $2 billion per year alone by using newer, energy efficient appliances. However, the California Energy Commission says we could do much better. The commission says many consumers don't take advantage of loans and rebates offered by utilities and government to promote energy savings. Mostly it says we are confused by all the options.

"Tell the homeowner, using a standardized state-approved approach, 'Here are the most cost-effective measures you can use to retrofit your building and here's how your building compares to others,'" said Panama Bartholomy from the California Energy Commission.

The report also says the state needs more money, including private financing to launch more so-called green businesses.
