Chevron to pay $170k fine over air quality

RICHMOND, Calif.

The company has agreed to pay a $170,000 fine for air quality violations.

The Richmond refinery under-reported pollution 27 times between 2007 and 2009 according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

The pollution involved sulfer dioxide gases being sent into the air by the plant's flares.

Chevron has fixed the problem and says it now has the lowest flare rate of any Bay Area refinery.
