Oakland celebrates new school year with rally

OAKLAND, Calif.

The rally, which was scheduled to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of Oakland City Hall at 1 Frank Ogawa Plaza, comes the weekend before the first day of classes. The carnival-like event will offer free food and local officials will attend and be available for conversation, organizers said.

There will be student success workshops and free backpacks filled with school supplies for the first 900 children to register for the rally.

Parents can speak with school district staff during information sessions or enjoy the last weekend of summer with their children playing carnival games and watching live performances.

Rally organizers hope the event will encourage parent involvement, regular attendance and provide supplies for the start of the school year.
