Golden Gate Bridge's sidewalk to reopen early

SAN FRANCISCO

Bridge district officials plan to announce the reopening date this afternoon. The sidewalk was initially scheduled to remain closed through the end of September.

After the western sidewalk reopens, there will be a partial closure of the eastern sidewalk, Golden Gate Bridge District spokeswoman Mary Currie said.

Ordinarily, the western sidewalk is reserved for bicyclists and the eastern sidewalk is shared by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Both sides have been sharing the eastern sidewalk since the end of May.

Moving bicyclists to the eastern side caused much more congestion and confusion for travelers on the bridge, as thousands of bicyclists used the western sidewalk on a daily basis.

The district painted lines on portions of the eastern sidewalk earlier this month to alleviate congestion and improve safety.
