Man dies after struggle with San Leandro police

SAN LEANDRO, Calif.

Officers were dispatched to Nations Giant Hamburgers at 1335 Washington Ave. at around 11:30 p.m. to investigate a report of a suspicious person there.

Nations employees had reported to police that a man in his early 30s was scaring customers by "acting strange" and "paranoid," and was asked to leave several times, but had refused.

Police arrived at the scene and found the man outside the restaurant. Officers said he refused to cooperate with the officers and a struggle ensued.

One of the officers used a Taser, but it had minimal to no effect, police said. The struggle continued, and at one point the two officers and the suspect fell to the ground.

Police said the suspect continued to resist arrest, and officers were unable to gain control of the situation. Two other officers arrived to assist, and were ultimately able to control and handcuff the man.

Immediately after the man was handcuffed, his health began to deteriorate, and the officers requested medical assistance, police said. Emergency medical personnel responded and transported the man to a hospital, where he died.

The cause of his death has not been determined, and the man's name has not been released because his family has not yet been notified.
