According to the Sacramento Bee, the technician responsible for testing the structural integrity of the new span of the Bay Bridge had been disciplined in the past for fabricating test results on other projects.
The Bee reports Caltrans officials, who were aware of Duane Wiles' past, never thoroughly investigated his previous work.
Caltrans says the new span is safe and the technician is currently on paid administrative leave.
