Woman accused of stealing from school children

SAN JOSE, Calif.

Sandra Contreras-Velazquez, 28, is suspected of stealing gold necklaces from several students, most of them as young as six years old, at six San Jose elementary schools.

Police say Contreras-Velazquez approached the children during school hours and spoke with them while pretending to be a family friend. According to police, she would ask the child to take off and show her the necklace and, in some cases, she would replace the necklace with costume jewelry.

The incidents took place between mid-October and mid-November. Investigators say Contreras-Velazquez never used any force or threats, but did gain the trust of the victims.

Contreras-Velazquez is currently booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on six felony counts of grand theft and a separate charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bail is set at $100,000.
