The shooting was reported at the Extended Stay Hotel near the mall in Richmond shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Police say the suspect and a clerk at the hotel were engaged in some kind of a dispute. A construction worker noticed a handgun in the waistband of the suspect.
The suspect brandished the weapon during the incident, according to police.
Law enforcement authorities were establishing a perimeter around the hotel when the suspect bolted from the hotel and hopped a fence.
"Officers were trying to get to the suspect," said Lt. Bisa French with the Richmond Police Department. "At some point, he went out of the building and a shot was fired. The suspect was injured and taken to the hospital. We are investigating this as an officer-involved shooting."
Police say the 22-year-old suspect suffered a non-life threatening injury.
