BEYOND THE HEADLINES
January 29, 2012
Recycling
Hosted by ABC7's Cheryl Jennings
This episode of Beyond the Headlines talks how about recycling. We're all getting better at it and know that it helps the environment. But there are new and creative programs finding unique ways to address recycling issues in the Bay Area.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generate 250 million tons of trash while recycling and composting nearly 85 million tons of this waste. Since 1990, the amount of Municipal Solid Waste going to landfills has dropped about 10 million tons, from about 145 million tons to 136 million in 2010.
Recycling has a wide variety of benefits. While reducing greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming, recycling also reduces water and air pollution and creates jobs within our communities.
