San Francisco is ready to begin spending a huge $248 million bond approved by voters last November to fix up the city's streets.

Mayor Ed Lee signed legislation that kicks off the first phase of the project with a repaving of 17th Street, a major thoroughfare for cyclists as well as cars.

The streets bond will also pay for improved sidewalks and a re-timing of street signals to keep traffic moving.
