Scientists know from lab work that squirrels signal to snakes with what's known as tail flagging and also with heat from the tail.
Scientists think the squirrels are trying to assess just how dangerous the threat is from the snake. They note squirrels are pretty quick at dodging snakes.
The study cost $390,000.
