Pomeroy Center celebrates 60th anniversary

SAN FRANCISCO

"Helping people live quality life, that's the basic thing, helping people reach their full potential, help them to do things that they might not be able to get to do because of the limited life of a person with special needs," computer lab specialist Sandra Nallis said.

It is what inspired Janet Pomeroy to start what was first called the Recreation Center for the Handicapped 60 years ago. There is nothing quite like it.

But the center is facing fiscal reality. Government budget cuts pose a threat.

"We've been running a deficit now for probably three or four years and you know that you can only do that for so long before you have to make severe cutbacks," Chairman Tom McGraw said.

That's why Friday's Banner of Love celebration takes on added importance.

"For this place to go away, it would be criminal," McGraw said.
