The new $150 million tunnel under busy Highway 50 near Placerville is built for animal traffic.
Caltrans expects it to cut down on accidents caused by drivers swerving to miss wildlife when, for whatever reason, it decides to cross the road.
The 200 foot long, 12 foot by 12 foot tunnel is expected to open next month.
There's a similar animal tunnel on Highway 89, and one on Interstate 80, at Donner Summit.
