California posts record recycling rates

SACRAMENTO

Last year we threw away just over four pounds of garbage per person, which is the lowest since the record keeping began in 1989, and an improvement over 2010. It includes residential, commercial, industrial, and demolition waste.

Though 65 percent of the 86 tons of waste generated in the state was kept out of landfills, officials think Californians can get that number up to 75 percent by 2020.

Sacramento is setting up more recycling plans to help reach the goal.
