The dog, named Popeye, is sniffing out invasive quagga and zebra mussels on boats in Lake Sonoma and Lake Mendocino.
The invasive mussels reproduce quickly to overtake a waterway and destroy its natural habitats and fisheries. The mussels have caused more than $500 million in damage nationwide. Popeye is randomly inspecting boats and will be back at work at Lake Mendocino Monday.
