Woman killed, girl injured in Walnut Creek crash

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.

Witnesses say that around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, a red truck was speeding down North Main Street when it plowed into a group of people on the sidewalk near the Marriot Hotel. Police say the driver is 53-year-old Hossein Tabrizi.

Irene Ward was walking in the area when she saw the tragic scene, "He just kind of ran into the people. They were pedestrians, three of them and the mom flew all the way from the corner and the girl flew all the way to the parking lot."

Walnut Creek police Lt. Bruce Hill says Hicks died apparently on impact. Her body was at least 40 feet from where the truck struck her and the girl.

Tabrizi had to be extracted from the truck by EMS crews. He was taken to a local hospital.

Police say they are investigating whether alcohol or drugs were involved in this fatal accident. Tabrizi now faces charges of vehicular manslaughter.
