Elderly Concord resident killed while crossing street

CONCORD, Calif.

The man was walking north across Clayton Road near Denkinger Court in the crosswalk when he was struck by a 2010 Mercury Mariner driven by a 42-year-old Concord man around 8:40 a.m., police said.

The pedestrian was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the driver's vision was obscured by the sun and condensation on his windshield, according to police.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, according to police.

The color of the traffic light at the time of the collision, along with possible alcohol or drug use, is under investigation, police said.
